VA-AAEM Narcotic Prescriptions Position Statement

By checking "I Agree" below, I certify that I am signing this petition only on my behalf, and have entered only my own personal information. I agree that my name, city and state can be posted online or in print with the petition, which states:

As practicing emergency physicians in the Commonwealth of Virginia and members of the Virginia Chapter Division of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, we are very concerned about the current misuse of prescription pain medications and the subsequent adverse health consequences, including substance addiction, chronic medical conditions, and death.

Our goal is to provide the most appropriate, highest quality medical care to our patients in the emergency department and other clinical areas in which we practice medicine. Pain management is one significant area of this medical care and an issue of importance not only for our patients but also for us.

We strive to address pain, appropriately and correctly, using our medical training and clinical judgment. In some instances, we will administer pain medications while, in other cases, we will withhold this therapy. When we do administer pain medications, we will choose the most appropriate treatment(s). These decisions are made in the best interest of our patients. In some cases, we will be successful in alleviating pain while in other instances, we will not reduce the pain.

The health and well-being of our patients is our primary concern; our primary goal is to provide the most appropriate, safest medical care to our patients.

We will not be influenced by external factors nor coerced into using pain therapies which we feel are medically incorrect, not indicated, or potentially dangerous.

We, practicing emergency physicians in the Commonwealth of Virginia and members of the Virginia Chapter Division of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, pledge to the public and affirm to our patients that we will do our best to provide appropriate, safe, and medically correct treatment in the emergency department and other areas of medical care.
